21st September 2008 - September Update!!!

First I would like to say, I have not been updating this site ever since I returned to College. I have less assignments left which means I can update this website more often! I have been thinking of a new layout for Only Edward Norton's birthday. If you created any templates, please send them in! I already created a new header and I can't wait to use it. Don't forget to return for updates. I plan on adding more screencaps and video clips. For now here are some news from September.

++ Ed Norton hopes cop genre film 'Pride and Glory' speaks to America's bigger issues  9th September, The Canadian Press by Gregory Bonnell

TORONTO - Edward Norton says his new movie about corrupt New York City cops might look like just another "genre" film but it has the potential to speak to broader issues in America.
"Pride and Glory" stars Norton as Det. Ray Tierney, who’s investigating the deaths of four officers gunned down during what appears to be a routine drug bust.
Tierney’s brother, played by Noah Emmerich, and brother-in-law, played by Colin Farrell, are also police officers. Eventually Tierney’s investigation uncovers evidence that casts suspicion on both men.
To make matters worse, Tierney’s father, played by Jon Voight, is also a cop - one who believes that police should take care of their own.
"On some level it’s about the difficulty of speaking truth to power and the tension between our loyalties to the people who do this service for us and the need to hold them to a high standard," Norton said Tuesday while promoting the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival.
"I started to have a special interest in it when I thought maybe this can be actually something that’s reflecting the moment (the United States) is going through ... in terms of its own sense of its ethics."
Torture, both physical and psychological, as a means to extract information from suspects is explored in the film.
"I looked at (the script) and felt like this has questions in it, this is questioning dynamics that our whole country is sorting through right now," Norton said.
"Whether on a local level in New York, things like the Abner Louima scandal, where there was a torture incident at play, or on a broader level."
Louima, a Haitian immigrant, was beaten and sodomized with a toilet plunger while in NYPD custody in 1997.
In recent years, reports of the American military using torture to extract information from suspected Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners have dominated headlines.
"The trick with genre, say the cop corruption genre, is ... to maybe look for a way that you make it reflect your generation’s version of that genre," said Norton.
"In part it’s about saying, ’What’s our generation experiencing that can refract through this and make it something that’s not just a cop corruption drama but that sort of ends up echoing that cultural moment?’ "

++Bob Thompson: Edward Norton might Hulk up again but won’t commit either way   10 September 2008, by Bob Thompson National Post
Edward Norton wanted to leave the past behind him Tuesday. For those few who may have missed it, Norton was frustrated with the shorter cut and the more mainstream edit of The Incredible Hulk when the comic book action flick hit theatres in June. He let the media know by leaking those thoughts then excusing himself from a series of Hulk interviews.
At the Four Seasons Hotel promoting his Toronto International Film Festival entry Pride and Glory, Norton was even less interested in rehashing the squabble. Perhaps that’s because the rebooted $150 million Hulk picture earned a respectable $244 million world wide, a definite cure for any movie controversy.
The 39-year-old also wouldn’t discuss when or if his Hulk might enter another picture or even if he would be up for a portrayal redo of the Green Monster/Dr. Bruce Banner in a Marvel Comics all-star Avengers feature with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The superhero confederacy was hinted at near the conclusion of The Incredible Hulk.
Certainly, Marvel has future plans for variations on the Avenger theme with or without Norton as the Hulk. In fact, there are two Avenger superhero flicks in the works. The First Avenger: Captain America is tentatively set for release in the spring of 2011 followed by The Avengers, which would follow that summer.
The serious-minded Norton was more talkative when it came to the cop crime thriller Pride and Glory which opens in October after two years of release delays. In it, Norton plays one of a family of New York City’s finest who gets caught up in the police corruption of a few bad men. They may or may not include some family members.
Besides Norton, there is Jon Voight and Colin Farrell doing their Pride and Glory emoting. But one scribe was clearly a Norton fan during the press conference. In the process of asking her how-do-you-choose-roles? query, she noted that Norton always selects intelligent, challengng movies to show off his actor skills.
The Oscar-honoured actor’s smirk became a smile when he replied. “Obviously, you’ve seen Death To Smoochy,” he said, referring to the universally loathed 2002 comedy he did with Robin Williams.

++Edward Norton Loves a Challenge   11 September 2008, by Katherine Monk, Dose
TORONTO -- Barack Obama and Ed Norton are sharing a passion, but they can't really talk about it right now. They don't want to taint Obama with the stain of celebrity, or manipulate American voters with a feature-length documentary about the African-American presidential contender.
"We're making a historical record, not something to play a role in the election. So we have an agreement with (the campaign) that we won't talk about this, or publicize it until the election is over. I can't talk about access; (but) it's a fascinating thing to document."
What Norton is happy to discuss is his role in Gavin O'Connor's new film, Pride and Glory, premiering here before its Oct. 26 North American release.
A story about corrupt cops working in New York City, Pride and Glory was apparently shaped by O'Connor's knowledge of the force, something gleaned during his upbringing. O'Connor's father was a cop, and both Gavin and his twin brother Gregory -- who acts as producer on the project -- made sure the script passed muster with their expert source.
In the hard-boiled and verite-shot film, Norton plays detective Ray Tierney -- a man who begins to question his ideals, loyalty and morality when he's called on to investigate a cop killing and a fellow member of the force, played by Colin Farrell.
For Norton, the classic "actor's actor," the chance to sink his teeth into a role with so much ambiguity was the reason he remained attached to the project while it languished in search of financing.
"I started off just liking Gavin's films," says Norton. "I loved Tumbleweeds and thought it was nuanced and a wonderful piece of work. And his hockey movie (Miracle) was so different, but also had this great performance from Kurt Russell. There was a lot of truth in the characters."
He says every actor prefers a challenge.
"I think we're all trying to find something meaty to work with, or frankly, something that's hard. You get into this (business) because you want to sort of try to pin down things that are complicated or hard about people," he says. "All people are paradoxical. No one is easily reducible, so I like characters who have contradictory impulses or shades of ambiguity. It's fun and it's fun because it's hard."
Norton says when he started reading the script, he realized most of the character's backstory and personality were revealed through other people talking about him, not the character talking about himself.
"I went along and thought, what's the deal with this guy? A lot of writers will telegraph things to you so you understand the character, so to leave a lot of empty spaces in the character was interesting."
Norton is known for taking on material that presents significant challenges, but he says he's not a genre snob and his resume proves it. The actor has appeared in such Hollywood formula pieces as The Italian Job, The Score and most recently, The Incredible Hulk.
"I like doing genre films because sometimes, they are just fun to do. If you can do a fun poker movie, that's fun... and it's fun to play cops and robbers. But I started to have a special interest in this project when I thought this could actually be something that's reflecting the moment we are going through -- in terms of a nation and as a culture -- regarding a sense of ethics."
Norton says the production delays on Pride and Glory have worked to the project's advantage because so much has happened in the U.S. in recent times.
"We had the whole torture scandals and discussions, not to say that Gavin had consciously referred to that. But the more I looked at the script and what was going on, the more it was starting to have an extra resonance for me because on some level it's about the difficulty of speaking truth to power. . . . "Pride and Glory may look like a cop drama, but on some level it's about the broader cultural moment we find ourselves in right now."

++Five Fast Takes from Toronto   14 September 2008, by Richard Corliss, Time
Pride and Glory Directed by Gavin O'Connor. Written by Joe Carnahan and O'Connor, from a story by O'Connor, Gregory O'Connor and Robert Hopes. With Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Noah Emmerich, Jennifer Ehle. From the U.S.
In a drug bust, four NYPD officers are ambushed and killed. The men were under the command of Capt. Francis Tierney (Emmerich), who comes from a family of Irish cops: his dad (Voight), brother Ray (Norton) and brother-in-law Jimmy Egan (Ferrell) are all on the force. So when Ray reluctantly takes the job of investigating the crime, his sleuthing leads to evidence of an inside job, and forces him into conflict with one or two bad apples in the Tierney brood. With its twisty plot that has Ray trekking through the lower depths of Harlem and Brooklyn, and the higher depths of cop corruption, this movie (in theaters Oct. 24) should have been way better than it is; it lurches between the numbingly banal and the laughably awful.
The convergence of an Oscar winner (Voight), an Oscar nominee (Norton), an Oscar wanna-be (Farrell) and a Tony winner (Ehle) ought at least to provide solid acting, and in stretches it manages that. Voight, navigating some dreadful dialogue, doesn't make a misstep; Norton executes his usual business of revealing little but threatening plenty; and Ehle, her head shaved as a cancer patient, deftly underplays her function of providing the poignant feminine touch. But by the the movie's climax, which discards the standard sibling shootout for bare-knuckles barroom machismo, and throws in the instant insanity of a secondary character that nearly stokes a race riot, Pride and Glory has waived all rights to a dispassionate verdict. It's glum and goofy enough make to We Own the Night, the requisite serioso cop drama from last year's festival circuit, seem a masterpiece by comparison. . . more

++Comic-Con: 'Incredible Hulk' screenwriter Zak Penn discusses strife with Edward Norton 25 July 2008, by Vanessa Juarez ew.com
Yes, [the fallout] prevented me from collaborating with him [during production]. I don't really know the guy, he has his own process and he chose to do it the way he wanted to do it. That said, I kept in touch with the people making the movie — but he, you know, has his own particular way of working and...it was unusual. I really don't know, I wasn't there, I was off making another movie, so it wasn't a situation where I was banging on the door saying, 'Let me come to the set.' But that was disappointing, I won't deny it. I wasn't happy with him coming to Comic-Con saying that he wrote the script. I can't tell you that made me go back and watch Fight Club." . . . more

Edward Norton just believes that he can make the film great. He wants to be apart of the movie too. When he believes in his ideas, he wants to make it happen. It may be hard for some people to work with him, but as long as the film comes out great, there really is no problem.

14th July 2008 - Slow Week

Added the Glen Wilson photoshoots to the gallery. Edward Norton is smokin'. I also changed the look of onlyedwardnorton.blackapplehost to a simple graphic link to the gallery and the home. Before it was the first look of the website, which wasn't ready for opening. I orginally wanted to use blackapplehost but I could not upload certain pictures because they exceeded the limit. Enough talk. Check the images out HERE.

Here is an interview by Drew Barrymore. I don't know if this is real or not. I found it from findarticles.com. Judge for yourself whether it is real or not.

++ Edward Norton Interview, by Drew Barrymore April, 1996
DREW BARRYMORE: I'm going to start at the very beginning, if that's O.K.
EDWARD NORTON: All I should say is, this is my first time.
DB: I know. I'm very excited I get to break your interview cherry.
EN: So go easy on me.
DS: I will, I will. Now, tell me where you're from.
EN: I'm from Columbia, Maryland. But, I would rather not go too much into that side of things for personal and professional reasons.
DB: You're a tough nut to crack, Norton. When did you start acting?

EN: I started studying acting when I was about six. I had a babysitter who subsequently went on to play Cosette in Les Miserables on Broadway. At the time, she was in a musical version of Cinderella, called If I Were a Princess, at the local drama school. There were a lot of little kids my age playing Cinderella's mice, and I really wanted to be a mouse. [DB laughs] I had a notion that if my babysitter got me down to the school quick enough, I could actually get to be a mouse before the production closed. She did take me down the day after I saw the play and I signed up for classes. I didn't play a mouse, but I acted all through my childhood and continued to do theater in college and in New York when I moved there.
DB: Now, Edward, you're getting amazing critical acclaim for your performance in your first feature film, Primal Fear. I've read - I swear - ten different things about how good you are in it. They're like, "The reason to see this movie, other than Richard Gere and his phenomenal always-ness, is Edward Norton."
EN: [laughs] That's another one for the Barrymore dictionary: "Always-ness."
DB: Just for the record, Edward thinks I should have my own dictionary because I make up so many words.
"Cansistency" - how 'bout that? It's sort of along the same lines.
EN: When a nuclear holocaust destroys the world and a new language rises from the rubble, I'm going to start plugging in words from the Drew Barrymore lexicon.
DB: I'm So honored. Anyway, because I know you so well, I know you're downplaying the praise you're getting and not going publicity crazy. You're growing into it, whereas a lot of actors get very hungry for it. You concentrate on your work and seeking out diverse characters, but only those that mean something to you. It's partly why I have so much respect for you as an actor. You're not a shmuck, but if you ever become one then I'm gonna kick your ass. In fact, we've already discussed this.
EN: I don't think I could have articulated it as well as you just did, so I'll take it as a compliment.
DB: [laughs] Was Primal Fear your first experience acting for film?
EN: I'd had some limited experience acting in student films and I'd done an independent short. I wasn't that unfamiliar with film, but it was a whole different ball game working on these big, intimidating Paramount soundstages when we made Primal Fear. I had a great role, though, that was oddly in line with the plays I'd been doing, in terms of the types of challenges it entailed. It was also a high-profile job, and there was a certain spotlight on me to see what I was going to do with the part. A role as good as that of Aaron Stampler is rarely made available to an unknown actor. Normally, you can't even read for a part like that unless you've been on the inside loop since you were very young. . . . . . more

4th July 2008 - Media Update

Added tons of images into the gallery! These include random premieres and photocalls, The Illusionist premiere and the Illusionist promotional movie stills.

I also added two awesome movie clips into the clips section. Interviews are a lot harder to obtain. If you come to this fansite often, you'll see the word 'awesome' written repeatively, not because of my poor vocabulary, it's just my 'catch phrase'. Lame I know. Hope you enjoy the media updates!

I love the next article. If you ask me, I prefer Edward Norton not being in the spotlight than causing scandals and always being in the tabloids. What do you think?

++ Why Edward Norton is Under-Publicized by the Media.... Is the Publicity Game Fair? 08 Feb 2007, Renee Morway
Norton does not do things in his personal life that are outrageous or over-the-top to cause the media to bombard you with his name. You do not see Norton proposing at the Eiffel Tower. You do not hear wild tales about his secret love child, legal problems, or sexcapades. Norton does not exploit or allow his personal life to be exploited for the sake of publicity. You never see Edward Norton pull any cheap publicity stunts. He keeps it clean. He keeps it real and he keeps it about the work. He prefers to keep his private life just that, private!
Do Norton and other celebrities who desire privacy pay a price for it? Are they deprived of publicity they deserve and have earned through their work? Do the media give actors and celebrities more credit for their personal shenanigans than their talent?
Who cares, right? These celebrities make so much frigging money they get paid to be harassed and have their personal lives torn to shreds for the entire world to see, right?
Wrong! The way I see it, an actor is paid to entertain us on the screen. When we pay $11.00 for a movie ticket it entitles us to see the character the actor portrays, that's it, nothing more. $11.00 barely buys anything nowadays, never mind carte blanche admission into a person's private life. When I pay my dentist or cat sitter for their services, which is much more than $11.00 by the way, it does not make me privy to all of their personal business. It is a good thing, too, because I do not want to know, just like I do not want to know about actors. I never could understand the morbid fascination John and Jane Q Public have with actors' private lives.
Now, I hear some people say that actors put themselves in public life, in the spotlight, and that they know what they are getting into when they enter the acting profession. They claim that huge paychecks are grounds for actors to put up with the paparazzi and all of the bull. I say, "Bull!" The public puts actors in the spotlight because they are so insatiably nosy. Celebrity rags and hound dog reporters put actors in the spotlight because they are so desperately greedy to make a buck. The celebrity gossip industry is a multi-gazillion dollar industry and that is why actors' private lives are splattered all over the world. If there was no money in it, you can bet your bananas it would not happen. Of course, some actors are guilty of trying to suck every ounce of publicity out of the celebrity gossip circuit cow's teat until they gag on globs of guzzled money. So, when you think about it, you really have to admire an actor like Edward Norton who does not resort to cheap publicity stunts... more

1st July 2008 - News

Here's an old article published in December 2006 where the reviewer compared the book to the film. I don't want to read the book. I love the film. It's simply perfect. It is Definitely the best performance by Edward Norton, and he is impressive in all of his movies.

++ A Plague Infects the Land, as Passion Vexes Hearts Even better, the new film gives us ample opportunity to spend time with Ms. Watts, whose remarkable talent helps keep movie faith and love alive, even in the tinniest, tiniest vehicles. This version of “The Painted Veil” has been transparently adapted to flatter its leading man, who coaxed the film into existence over a number of years and, with Ms. Watts, serves as one of its producers.
Dry as dust on the page and nearly as hard to grab hold of, Walter registers as a far more robust character on the screen. The novel centers on Kitty and contains large swaths of her cogitating and fretting by way of the third person narration, but the film opens up the story to embrace her and Walter more equally . . .more

Here are the reports on Hollywood Box Office Chart. The Incredible Hulk is number five after only being released for three weeks. So far it has made a total of $115,859,210, with last week making $9,577,245. It is above The Love Guru. Thank God. I like Mike Myers, but it's starring Justin Timberlake and I don't want to watch him act. It's too painful. It's opened worldwide! Go check it out and support Edward Norton. If you've seen it, write your opinion of the film.

30th June 2008 - Better Gallery

Only Edward Norton Gallery is up! Okay, it's been up for a long time but now it looks better than before. A lot more photos have been uploaded to the gallery. Since images take up a lot of room, I'm using a different host for it. Check it out: HERE

Edward Norton is getting some bad press about his Diva like behaviour.

++ Norton Behaves Like a Hulk, New York Post March 14, 2008 -- THEY might want to create a new Oscar for Edward Norton: Hollywood's Biggest Pain in the Butt. Word is Norton is warring with Marvel Studios over the final cut of "The Incredible Hulk," which he wrote and stars in but is threatening not to promote. The temperamental star's rep denied any serious friction, insisting: "Edward was brought on board by Marvel as a producer, screenwriter and actor, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that he has a lot of creative input into the postproduction process. His deal was for all three, and he takes those roles seriously." She would not elaborate on Norton's issues. The Oscar-nominated actor has a reputation for being difficult. Tony Kaye, who directed him in "American History X," charged that Norton reedited the flick to give himself more screen time. And screenwriter/director Joe Eszterhas cmhere2once cracked: "You don't want Edward Norton to star in your movie. He now rewrites all the scripts he agrees to act in." Universal Pictures, distributor of "Hulk," which debuts nationwide on June 13, had no comment.

++ Brad Pitt and Edward Norton catch RadioheadBrad Pitt and Edward Norton went to see a Radiohead concert on Wednesday night (18.06.08). The actors - who met when they starred together in 2005 movie 'Fight Club' - looked happy and excited as they attended the performance at Milan's Civica Arena in Italy. Edward has previously spoken about his and Brad's love of the British band, saying: "Brad and I had a mutual fixation on the second two Radiohead albums." Brad and Edward were also accompanied by Mariane Pearl, a close friend of Brad and his long-term partner Angelina Jolie since Angelina portrayed her in controversial movie 'A Mighty Heart' in 2007. . . . more

For a fan of Edward Norton, this is a serious issue. Not the Radiohead thing of course, they're my favourite band! If Edward Norton wants a lot of the control he should be a director for his next project. I'm having the same issue since I'm directing a short film for fun. Love ya Edward! Don't change a bit! But continue promoting the film since you're in it.

10th June 2008 - Incredible Hulk Reviews

The new Hulk movie is looking a lot more interesting. Well, if it's starring Edward Norton, how can they go wrong. Am I right or what?

++ Few movies had as drastic a change in box office fortunes as Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk movie. In its first weekend in the USA, Hulk earned a promising $62 million. The weekend after that it fell sharply to $18 million, and then to $8 million the weekend following that! Bad word-of-mouth sunk the film: it simply wasn’t what audiences expected. Walking out of cinemas screening it, the sheer disappointment amongst ten-year-old boys was palpable. Nothing had prepared them for the rather oddball art house flick meets superhero comic book that was 2003’s Hulk. All they wanted was to see was Hulk smash puny humans . . .more

++ Nikki Finke reports this morning that Edward Norton, the star, screenwriter, and producer of this summer's The Incredible Hulk, is battling Marvel over how to edit the movie. When he signed on, Norton was promised "tremendous involvement and access" and was invited to help rewrite Zak Penn's script, which sort of strikes us a mistake given his famously cooperative past . . .more

++ Edward Norton talked to Total Film magazine (via The Sun) and said there is no connection between upcoming The Incredible Hulk and 2003's Hulk . . . more

Everything is linkable at this stage. I took a long time making all the pages. I decidede to make The gallery and screencaps different because the gallery host has a limit on the amount of galleries I create. The only reason I use a gallery host is because there's too many images. I added one clip from Everyone Says's I Love You. There's also a whole bunch of information if you have no idea what Edward Norton has gone through.
